Distinguishing the American crocodile from the American alligator can be tough, but there is one main feature that sets the crocodile apart - its long, slender snout. You can find both crocodiles and alligators in South Florida, where they inhabit wetlands, ponds, creeks, and canals. Despite the negative perception of crocodiles as dangerous and aggressive, this particular species is extremely shy, reclusive, and rarely seen by people. Once hunted intensively for their hides, today the loss of habitat, illegal killing, and roadkill are the greatest threats faced by American crocodiles. When driving through areas where this species lives, make sure to remain alert and safely come to a stop if you encounter a crocodile crossing the road. Letting the animal pass will protect both the crocodile and your passengers from potential injuries that could result from a collision.
