Known locally as kererū, the New Zealand pigeon is one of only two bird species on the island big enough to swallow large fruit and disperse their seeds over long distances. As gardeners of the forests, the survival of this species is directly connected to the health and regeneration of New Zealand’s native forests. While their initial decline was the result of people hunting the bird for its meat and feathers, this practice is now illegal, and predators like cats and possums pose the greatest threat. These species will eat kererū eggs and young, and will also attack and kill adult pigeons. One of the best ways you can help protect native birds is to keep cats indoors whenever possible, and only let dogs off leash in designated areas. This ensures that nesting birds are not disturbed, giving them and their chicks a much better chance at survival.
