I always pay attention to the animal’s reaction. If I see any negative impact, I stop and look for an alternative light solution. One beautiful morning on Sea Lion Island in the Falklands, I was blessed with an amazing sunrise. The position of the sun and the configuration of the terrain did not allow me to work with silhouettes, so I decided to try a bit of fill flash with the penguins. It’s extremely challenging to get it right because their shiny belly feathers are highly reflective and it’s really easy to “burn out” the whites, and consequently all the detail. I was surprised to see that the penguins were actually attracted by the light and started gathering around me.
