Celebrities and others on social media are posting blue squares with the hashtag #blueforsudan to raise awareness of the deadly uprising in Sudan, where protesters are seeking a full transition to civilian-led democracy. This comes after peaceful protests led the country’s longtime dictator to step down in April. Since then, the North African country has been ruled by military forces that are reluctant to relinquish full control. As civilian and military leaders have negotiated, protesters have continued to take to the streets in a mass civil disobedience campaign. Earlier this month, military forces opened fire on a pro-democracy sit-in in the capital, Khartoum, leaving at least 118 dead, according to doctors. The blue social media posts were inspired by the favorite color of Mohamed Hashim Mattar, 26, who was allegedly shot and killed by Sudanese forces.
