In all the years that I have photographed swans I watch and wait patiently as they glide serenely around a local lake, often pausing eventually close to where I sit. As they slowly start to appear from around a particular corner they have on every other single occasion always formed a single line behind the adult female, remaining largely unseen until they split to feed on the algae strewn weir beneath which I sit. On this occasion however I was lucky as not only did break formation early, forming a serendipitously neat line as they did so but they also momentarily passed the exact same plane of focus as the adult female. The nature of the location at this time of day, always when the mist has burned away, means that I’m unable to shoot with a large depth of field as the distant forest starts to reveal distracting detail. As such, largely because I’m shooting primarily on my 200-400mm F4 lens it means that it is even more important to shoot only at F4. The narrow depth of field that this aperture produces means that getting all of my swans in a row like this does require an inordinate amount of luck. So here we have it, an image that is several years in the making of mum and her six precious babies, all of whom I’m delighted to report are still doing well. I’ll stop short of praising all of the cygnets because not untypically one of them has decided to break protocol and is instead looking at his mother, but then of course there is always bloody one! 😃」6月9日 4時41分 - thephotosociety
