This 75th Anniversary of DDay , I keep asking myself the question, is it possible to hold two opposing feelings about the military and find any peace with it. I come from a military family. Both grand-fathers WW2 vet/fighter pilots and my father Vietnam vet/fighter pilot and myself somehow landing in (I wanted it) one of the most influential war stories of all time. As I walk around these streets of Normandy, meeting children dressed as soldiers, and meet many many soldiers who express to me that they joined because of ‘Band’ my heart seems to be able to shrink and swell simultaneously as I feel both pride and sorrow for participating in the continuing of war legacy. I can only hope we recognize the difference between a war to liberate the world from fascism and the genocide of the Jewish people vs wars waged for the profit of military industry and the satisfaction of psychopathic personalities who we’ve left in charge of shaping foreign policy. This 75th anniversary I’m thinking about those whose voices rise up and ask us all to consider peace and justice over blood lust and greed. I hold high hope for our collective future. #bandofbrothers #reunion #dday

nicashman Beautifully written and extremely thought provoking. Went to a screening of saving private Ryan in Co Cork tonight and for a walk on the beach afterwards and I still find it hard to comprehend the atrocities that were committed not too many years ago. There were people present in that cinema tonight whose relatives had served in the war, their courage & selflessness and their sacrifice to make the world a better place is nothing short of astounding.

taranoellejohnson So well said! I love Band of Brothers and feel enormously proud of my loved ones that are veterans. But I now work with refugee from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. It's given me a different perspective that I deeply wrestle with. It's so hard. I hope as well that we only fight those that are absolutely necessary and avoid it as much as possible. And continue to pursue peace at every turn.

My father was also a Vietnam Vet and I am so grateful for the Military’s service but blind gratitude is dangerous.
