At the moment, 38% of the world is in danger of being desertifed. While land degradation has occurred throughout history, the pace has accelerated to 30 times the historical rate according to the UN. The leading driver is the animal agriculture industry. Other causes that contribute to land losing its ability to retain water and sustain life include drought, deforestation, urbanization and mining. Millions live on drylands that are vulnerable to desertification, which could displace an estimated 50 million people in the next 10 years. Farmers are the key players in the efforts to eradicate desertification and address consequences of land already destroyed. For those of us who aren’t farmers, small modifications in our food and resource consumption choices will be massively impactful. Actionable items: eliminate or reduce the amount of meat and dairy you eat, decrease the number of flights you take and lower the amount of power you use. Individual action is crucial.
