@princessnokia, whose real name is Destiny Frasqueri, grew up obsessed with music, the Village Voice and gay clubs. Now that she’s been performing sold-out shows for years, she sees herself as "being about mistakes and celebration of community and acceptance of alternative people." Her shows are “a mecca, a sanctuary for all those people like me.” For @nytmag’s annual New York issue, we sent Sasha Arutyunova (@sashafoto) and Brenda Ann Kenneally (@alittlecreativeclassinc) all over the city to capture 12 performers at work. You don’t have to be famous to be a star — but you do need talent, charisma and a lot of hard work. Just ask the subway dancer @joneshanma or the pianist Earl Rose, who has memorized thousands of songs in the decades he’s been working as a lounge pianist. See how these 12 artists rode their craft to stardom in this weekend’s @nytmag or at the link in our bio.
