Each year in the U.S. about 40,000 babies are born with heart defects; about 10,000 are likely to need surgery or other procedures before their 1st birthday. Skylar Jones was 3 when she died at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, 2 months after a relatively low-risk heart surgery. Her parents were not aware that doctors had concerns about the hospital’s cardiac surgery program at the time. 5 days after Skylar’s heart surgery, the hospital’s pediatric cardiologists pressed their division chief about what was happening at the hospital. How could they refer children to their own hospital for heart surgery when they thought patients might have a better chance of survival elsewhere?
