How does the trauma of a natural disaster affect a community? As it turns out, one of the best places to begin looking for answers may be a small, strange island full of monkeys. The island Cayo Santiago sits about a half-mile off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico, near a village called Punta Santiago. It is home to hundreds of rhesus macaques, whose population scientists have studied meticulously since 1938. Their changes in behavior after Hurricane Maria are providing unique insights into how trauma affects individuals and societies. @glennagordon shot this photo.
