Rats are taking over New York City. The city has always been forced to coexist with the four-legged vermin, but their numbers have expanded exponentially in recent years, infesting just about every corner. Mayor Bill de Blasio, like mayors before him, has declared war, but so far the city is still losing. Gentrifying neighborhoods, milder winters, a growing population and the city’s thriving tourism are all reasons that rats are everywhere. It’s not just New York: Cities like Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles are also confronting outbreaks. “Everywhere I go, rat populations are up,” said Robert Corrigan, a research scientist. @stephensperanza shot this photo.
