On May 25, 1954 Robert Capa was photographing for Life in Thai-Binh, Indochina, when he stepped on a landmine and was killed.

Capa was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm posthumously by the French army, and in 1955 the Robert Capa Gold Medal Award was established to reward exceptional professional merit.

Today marks the 65th anniversary of the Magnum co-founder's death.
