Photos & video by @BabakTafreshi | Some consider this art, a symbol, and some know it as identity landmark, but it's certainly one of the worst examples of light pollution. The intense blue beam of light pointing skyward from the Luxor Hotel is a Las Vegas recognizable sight that can also trap massive number of insects, bats (filmed here), and migrating birds. Not contributing to safety or security, It's there every night since 1993. At the intensity of 42 billion candela, it has equal light used roughly in 10,000 LED streetlights, enough for a small city. The waste of energy is a minor part of the problem. Blue wavelengths are among the worst for sky glow: They bounce around and scatter in the atmosphere, brightening the night sky even more than warmer-colored counterparts. Swipe life to step away from the casino and further out to the northern mountains where the light is still easily visible from 20 miles away (slide 3). As we move further the glow of the city is pictured as it appears to birds passing the area. The last slide from 90 miles (145 km) away is the unbelievable amount of light still visible from a high altitude vista in the Death Valley National Park under an ocean of stars. According to International Dark Sky Association (IDA), many millions of birds die colliding with needlessly illuminated buildings and towers and even a larger number of migrating birds are disturbed and confused on their path due to intense lights pointed to the sky or horizon.
