Behind the forms ~ a look into the intricate techniques and materials used to create @jordan_roth’s custom Met Gala costume.
To create this look, first, the outer layer was made with the ‘glitch’ delicate laser-cutting technique; each line is 0.8 mm thin, and interlinked to all the other thousands of lines by small waves. The line-design of the waves, when moving, creates a three-dimensional bubble effect and is designed to move faster than the eye can follow - therefore called a ‘glitch’. It literally tricks the eyes and mind. Classical red theatre curtains were printed onto this glitch, and are hanging from the theatre proscenium, which is a cropped tailored jacket. The waves of the red glitch can be compared to a theatre curtain, but instead of revealing the theatre when the curtains are opened, the theatre now lies in between the lines of the fabric and becomes visible when stretched.
The ‘glitch' is a technique developed in collaboration with architect and professor @philip.beesley. It uses a hybrid material of cotton and mylar, first digitally printed and then heat-bonded, to finally be laser-cut into a very fine wavy web. A digitally printed silk in a spheroid pattern of 14 meters was placed underneath the ‘glitch’. Finally, a thin boning construction was created to be placed inside, so Jordan is able to extend his arm length. When he unfolds, the cape has a span width of 3.5 meters wide.

For the print we collaborated with the very talented photographer @davidleventi.
