I remember my great grandfather telling us about how him and his brother swam here from Mexico very young with no money looking for a better life. He was very short and his skin was red I remember thinking I don’t see other people that look like him. My dad explained to me that he was Aztec and I said I thought he was from Mexico my dad just laughed and said Meja learn your history as you get older and don’t listen to what they teach you in school about the history of who you are.

As I got older I looked around at a lot of things and did my own research. Can I give you a little history lesson. 🙋🏽‍♀️

Cinco De Mayo is a celebration of when the Mexican army had victory over the French army in the battle of Puebla in 1862. A year later the French army returned and defeated Zaragoza and the Mexican army taking Puebla. May 5th is not Mexico’s independence from Spain that is September 16th. This “holiday” is mostly celebrated in the US it became very popular in California in the 1980’s used to spike beer sales by big companies. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Sorry to break it to you don’t @ me in the comments either.

I’m proud of my heritage I love my people and I celebrate that as much as I can (not just one day a year) by educating my kids and sharing the truth beyond what we’re taught in school with others. If your drinking beer, eating tacos and celebrating Mexico-American culture I’m not stopping you or judging you just trying to help you a bit lol. Have a great day and be safe!
