Photo by @daisygilardini | By April the pack ice in the frozen fjords of Svalbard are slowing opening up. This young bear is scouting the ice edge looking for seals. Of the eight species of bears, polar bears are the only bear to be truly carnivorous. They are at the top of the Arctic food chain, and seals represent 90% of their diet. As apex predators, polar bears are exposed to high levels of pollutants, which accumulate in the food chain. Therefore they’re a good indicator of the health of the entire Arctic ecosystem.
