“So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won’t see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means and what life is for.” George Leigh Mallory
Art work by Thom Ross, Santa Fe, NM artist and historian. Oil on canvas depiction of Sandy Irvine and George Mallory resting on the North East Ridge of Everest, 8 June 1924.
With respect for the two climbers who lost their lives on Everest. With empathy and humility for the Irvine and Mallory families.

My dad had dinner with Noel Odell before he passed and he swore he saw Mallory and Irvine above the 2nd step! I remember years ago at a presentation by Jake Norton my dad told the story and everyone was blown away haha. Keep in mind he was a geologist and knew rock features very well. Also, who knows what conditions were like at the time. ?

Brilliant post. Reminded me of Shakleton’s epic newspaper advert when recruiting for the Endurance mission.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success

That’s what I always say: I go working to enjoy my life and to make things which makes my happy. I’m not living to go to work. Life is to short.
