The partial loss of the Notre Dame Cathedral is felt by everyone, regardless of faith or origin. Humanity, over the ages, has created structures to express devotion. As we become a global community these buildings, from the Taj Mahal to Angkor Wat to the Kōln Cathedral to the Masjid al-Haram to Machu Picchu to the Potala Palace, are shared by all. They reminder us that we live for something that outlasts our brief existence.
We will rebuild because we honor the past. We will rebuild because the future needs to understand that we care. We will rebuild.

As Donna Tart writes in the Goldfinch “That life - whatever else it is - is short. That fate is cruel but maybe not random. That Nature (meaning Death) always wins but that doesn’t mean we have to bow and grovel to it. That maybe even if we’re not always so glad to be here, it’s our task to immerse ourselves anyway: wade straight through it, right through the cesspool, while keeping eyes and hearts open. And in the midst of our dying, as we rise from the organic and sink back ignominiously into the organic, it is a glory and a privilege to love what Death doesn’t touch.”

In the last 70 years in just the US the Catholic Church has been systematically manipulating and abusing tens of thousands of children, before that their history was one of destruction, rape, murder and the perfecting of torture on those who had different beliefs than theirs. As pretty as it was, it was a symbol of all of the actions of the Catholic Church being tied to a higher power, justified by their connection to god. Why rebuild? We should not put this corrupt institution on a pedestal because they employed great architects a thousand years ago.

Vielen Dank Conrad ? Mag Notre Dame auch für den einen Symbol der Unterdrückung oder was auch immer und für den anderen ein sinnloses Invest sein...?! Demjenigen der jemals in Paris vor ihr stand, blutet das Herz...Entschuldigung?

Why not #virtuesignal over the 875 churches in France vandalized last year? Why not recognize the 400 year-old church in Germany that was destroyed and replaced with a mosque? What else happened in the news that was overshadowed?

I’ve got to wonder if the resources that will go into rebuilding would be better spent fighting global warming or building homes, or digging wells
