When confronted with the word ‘drone,’ though, most people react negatively. They connect this technology to disruption and violation of privacy. If one were to stop and actually look at and study this technology, however, one will soon realize its potential is unprecedented, and virtually unlimited. Drones are widely used these days for scientific purposes, from land mapping to agricultural industry: measuring the height of crops; using heat sensors to detect presence of life (human or animal); during search and rescue operations when trying to access otherwise inaccessible areas; for monitoring wildfires; for overhead inspection of infrastructure like pipelines; for delivering medical supplies to remote communities and disaster zones in an emergency — the list goes on. When it comes to photography, people tend to link it to thoughtless recreational use — which, yes, unfortunately is a reality on occasion. When used respectfully, and in accordance with strict safety rules — including proper training and official flight authorizations, combined with respect for wildlife — these little machines allow one to produce documentary and educational material that would’ve been possible in the past only by leaving a huge environmental footprint, with expensive, polluting helicopters and planes.
