Many people when they hear that someone has bipolar disorder they only think of extreme behavior that is either dangerous to others or themselves. Most people don’t know there are actually 2 different forms of bipolar which have clear distinctions that manifest themselves in different ways. I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 which WebMd describes as having “symptoms of elevated mood that never reach full-blown mania. They often pass for extreme cheerfulness, even making someone a lot of fun to be around -- the "life of the party." Not so bad, you might think -- except bipolar II disorder usually involves extensive and disabling periods of significant depression, which can often be harder to treat than if episodes of hypomania had never occurred.” In contrast with Bipolar 1 where “People in manic episodes may spend money far beyond their means, have sex with people they wouldn't otherwise, or pursue grandiose, unrealistic plans. In severe manic episodes, a person loses touch with reality. They may become delusional and behave bizarrely.” What I think is unfortunate in both of these conditions is that people can be either celebrated or demonized depending on whether their actions are looked upon as “being successful.” If any of you have watched the #fyrefestival documentaries or the most recent documentary on #elizabethholmes on @hbo you would probably be like most people and think these individuals are psychotic and should be locked up. Being diagnosed with Bipolar 2 has given me a different perspective when I see people displaying such psychotic behavior as the aforementioned people. I have empathy for them and wonder if they aren’t the demons people think they are and that they could possibly have an illness that is the cause of not only their extreme failures but also the driving factor behind their success. I also think there are many undiagnosed people whose grandiose ambitions have been met with success and are heralded as geniuses even though they may have hurt a lot of people along the way to get to where they are. I hope that as people are becoming more educated around these issues that, as a society, we will not rush to judge them. (Continued below)
