Big part of why there was so much bank/leverage to whoo @TheRoots was because Geffen was the top label. The $uce$$ of @aerosmith/@gunsnroses/#nirvana alone enabled an urban division they never had. #GZA & @TheRoots were their 1st signings. 11 acts came later. SignSignSign! We started #DoYouWantMore?!!??! Dec 93. By late March we had some keepers (make 70 sketches then pick best 13-16 out the pack) NOTHING prepared us for the events of April 8th (world found out 3 days later) when #KurtCobain passed. I was recording by day/visiting dad at night (hospital). my activity slowed way down by this point creatively. My manager hit me like 11:10am w an URGENCY in his voice he wouldn’t use until 15 yrs later the morn of the “Bachmann incident”. He laid it all out “dude we could be f^*+<d!!!” half asleep I was like “huh?”—-he explained “w Aero headed to Sony & Axl/em “not makin an album this year” (ha! Try 14 yrs!) & now this” still groggy he continued—-“Kurt Cobain committed suicide man!”.....I was stunned “—wha?” I didn’t even have time to process what I just heard—-it’s like the house was on fire: do you cry over what you lost in said house or do you save yourself now!!!? Still not knowing how this effected my business I asked what he meant by “we might be done!!!!!” His guess was this latest development meant that the label would pull the plug on the urban department. Solution? “Pull a Hendrix”—-in 24 days we: shot the lp cover, 3 videos, finished 9 songs, mixed 11, mastered/sequenced entire lp & in a fashion similar to Swayze & Goldberg finessing the bank in #Ghost, we miraculously “exiled” our way to London copping a 3 bedroom flat in hopes of getting an agent ✔️, scouring Western Europe playing ANYWHERE ✔️ & hoping label would see this as initiative ✔️ (& NOT stealing our budget 👀) to NOT not drop us...just like they did the urban department ✔️ rich called it.
