Released April 1st 94, some 9 months before our official major label sophomore release #DYWM. You’d have to know how intense the bidding war to have the Roots was back in 93. All of that year we courted/wined & dined by like 6 labels. The #YoMTVRaps watershed was in full swing & labels were willing to shell out loot by then (88-92 was lowball offer times: De La’s debut album was made for under 30k—-meanwhile an album like #FunkyDivas’ budget coulda been as high as 900k-1.5 mil. Each label gave respectable offers (Diddy doesn’t remember calling us “whack”—-his cousin was our lawyer at the time so we were optimistic his new label Bad Boy would join the fray but alas he was right: we didn’t have singles (we had zero clue what obstacles in the marketplace were awaiting us)—so yeah he passed. Def Jam changed their minds too, they were like “incredible show but y’all don’t got singles!” We decided on Polygram in sept of 93. The truth was we loved #BlackSheep & thought they’d be cool label mates. So the contracts w our names misspelled were sent. No probs, send new contract over weekend (sat fed ex) we sign, boom! Monday we sign!....—-welp what had happened was that fed ex never came as label stated. No sweat, Monday cool too...right? We will sign then. That Friday we got a mysterious call: a 7th label wanted a shot (?!!) we made our minds up already....right? right??—but then again 👀—-the courting process was the ultimate! best restaurants ever! they pay the bill!!!—-we ain’t got nothing else better to do right? let’s just do a horse & pony show, get more steak & lobster and boom “sorry we going to polygram”. We did just that—well tried to...kinda. At dinner Wendy Goldstein (now at @republicrecords) made it extremely clear she was down for whatever. We didn’t feel like we had anything to lose so we said the most obnoxious thing that came to mind (“we want thi$/that/tho$e/and throw in an extra blah blah for me a$ well)—30 hours of silence—they called our bluff & accepted the offer!!! Now what? (To be continued)」4月2日 14時40分 - questlove
