On International Transgender Day of Visibility, we revisit our interview in #LOVE20.5 with Britain’s first transgender model #AprilAshley. Her return to Norris Green, the housing estate where she grew up, where she was made a Liverpool Citizen of Honour on her 80th birthday and her 2016 award of an honorary doctorate by the University of Liverpool in recognition of her work in trans rights. As the dean who presented her with the award commented, ‘Her life and her achievements are an inspiration to anyone who believes that we should be free to define ourselves and our own identity.’
