I took this photo on a magical evening in NYC a few months ago and every time I look at it I’m reminded of the peace and tranquility even a busy city can posses. Felt like a perfect fit for today’s #putapriceonit post from Cosima Balletti-Thomas, a senior at Fordham University in NYC. (Also, many of our leaders are participating in today's global youth climate strike, which is taking place in more than 90 countries.) “Having been raised in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri, I may not know what it is like to grow up next to the ocean or adjacent to a vast forest and witness their deterioration from climate change; however, I have had experienced my fair share of natural disasters, which are becoming increasingly frequent and destructive due to global average temperature rise. Living in Manhattan today, I constantly hear the horror stories of Superstorm Sandy and notice the “High Water Mark” signs posted throughout the Lower East Side to remind people of the catastrophe. My point is that regardless of where you live, you, everyone you know, and everyone you will know are affected by climate change. How many more disasters, displaced people, and degrees until we stop treating climate change as a partisan issue and finally commit to the global endeavor against it? Putting a price on carbon emissions will not only help immensely in reducing both individual and collective CO2 emissions, but it will also encourage people, places, and corporations to act more sustainably and hold them accountable for neglect towards the environment. While nature is a self-sustaining powerhouse, humans are not and must rely on ecosystem services for survival. That should be reason enough to convince us and the politicians who are charged with the task of governing and protecting us to not only endorse but actively support the #PutAPriceOnIt campaign.”」3月18日 2時14分 - nikkireed
