I love this spot.
It’s where the #littleRedLighthouse stands, built in 1880 to shine a light to ships in this once dangerous part of the Hudson River. It became obsolete, particularly when the giant George Washington Bridge was built over, around and above it. The city was going to destroy it, but due to a magical children’s book (called The Little Red Lighthouse) it was saved— by a letter writing campaign from children and parents who had fallen in love with the story. A couple times of year, you can get a tour inside from the Dept of Parks, rangers in smart uniforms who keep it looked after. They seem happy to do so.
It’s so simple and uncomplicated. It is just standing tall, but dwarfed by a behemoth of iron and 19th century ingenuity, next to a river that defines the western edge of the island of Manhattan. And... it moves me every time I see it.
