It’s time to think outside the square. For 7 years I’ve posted square photos only on my feed. The square made sense when I was shooting with an iPhone, because for most of that time I was able to shoot in square mode. I saw the world through a square composition (yes there are metaphors there), and I always took photos with that in mind. But the more I started shooting with my “real” camera, the harder it became to keep seeing the world through the square. More and more frequently, I find myself not sharing some of my favorite shots because cropping them to a square changes the photo entirely. So, it’s time to welcome the rectangle. It hurts my brain a little to break the trend of my feed (no, really, it does), but following this self-imposed rule is not helping me become better. For the next few days I’ll post examples of rectangular crops I’ve wanted to share. For those who are interested, I’ll put the square versions in my story to illustrate what is lost when I stick to the square (because, ironically, Instagram doesn’t allow square and rectangular photos to be posted in the same batch). Sometimes beautiful stuff just doesn’t fit in a square. Who knew? ? Here’s one I took recently in Maine.
