As much as i love climbing upside-down trees, this one reminds me of all the damage done by wildfires. What can we do to prevent the next one from getting out of control? I’d love to get involved in some sort of community brush clearing... is that a thing?

One thing I would look into is incorporating Permaculture practices into the land management. The practice helps moisture to soak into the land (also decreasing flood damage) which later in the year keeps plants healthier by holding the moisture in the soil and also the plants. Healthy living plants are far less of a fire hazard. The brush actually helps keep some moisture in the ground by protecting it from the sun. If you take the brush away it encourages further evaporation from the soil, thus drier plants, thus more fires and increasing the severity. It's the same reason you put mulch on a garden bed. Lots happening with this in Australia. @jessiegraffpwr I think it's awesome you see an issue and you want to help address it!

I like to think of forest fires as the earth taking a shower. It is sad when people are effected and homes, lives, precious family heirlooms are lost. There is a theory out there, that I tend to align with, thinking that we have made the fires worse by stopping them and not letting nature clean house the way it wants to. There is significant build up of boxwoods and ground cover in a lot of the parks that the Rangers are struggling to keep up with to keep the fire danger lower. They mentioned this in Calaveras Redwoods Park by Arnold, Ca. You may ask there. Would love to know what they say... I might come help as well. Let me know.

Brush clearance is to be 100 feet or more from a structure. I highly suggest doing a bunch more. The fire department does go out and clear brush if their notices of to do so are not complied with. This does bring awareness to what we went through with that Woolsey Fire!

The best way to prevent more fires like this Jessie is convince your president and fellow countrymen that global warming is real! There will be another fire with hotter drier weather. The USA and especially California are feeling the heat of what I’m saying.

It takes proper forest management. Go check out the Black Hills forest around Spearfish SD. That is a healthy forest. #loggingisgood #healthyforest

@teamrubicon does brush clearing operations all over the country, among many other disaster relief and prevention projects. Anyone can volunteer!
