Tyson's portrayal of the title role in the 1974 television film The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman won her further praise; among other accolades, the role won her two Emmy Awards and a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She was honored by the Congress of Racial Equality, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the National Council of Negro Women. In 1977 she was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame and was named a Kennedy Center honoree in 2015. In November 2016, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor in the United States. In 2018 at the age of 93 she became the first Black actress to receive an honorary Oscar from the Academy Tyler Perry, ‪Quincy Jones‬ and Ava DuVernay presented Tyson with the award, with DuVernay noting that Tyson was “the seed for so many of us, the rose that we adore.” “Her work, grace, dignity, class, humility and profound professionalism firmly placed her on the pedestal of Hollywood royalty,” Jones added, “and now, at long last, I could not be more honored to say that tonight, Cicely Tyson receives her more than well-deserved Oscar.” Cicely Tyson, we salute you. #CicelyTyson #BlackHistoryMonth
