Olympic glory. Then chemotherapy. A year ago, when Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins won the United States’ first #Olympic gold medal in cross-country skiing, @kikkanimal already had breast cancer. She just didn’t know it yet. It wasn't until 3 months later that Kikkan would find something hard in her right breast and receive her diagnosis: stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma. “When I found out I had cancer, it was almost disbelief,” Kikkan said. “It was like, ‘I did everything right, and I’ve taken really good care of myself’ … But what really has been the most upsetting is the fact we couldn’t try and have another kid right away.” Kikkan and her husband Jeff Ellis have been uncommonly open throughout her treatment, particularly on social media. She’s posted from the wig shop, the hospital recovery room, the bathroom mirror and her couch after chemotherapy. Kikkan finished her final radiation session on January 25, but still takes medication. Visit the link in our profile to read more about how Kikkan’s life changed after her diagnosis as well as what she’s up to next. @alanapaterson shot these photos of Kikkan with her son, Breck, Kikkan skiing and Kikkan with some of her wigs.
