I’m about to climb Sigiriya which is referred to by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Sigiriya is one of the most valuable historical monuments of Sri Lanka. It looks like a massive rock was just dropped from the heavens since it’s surrounded by mainly flat land. The height of Sigiriya is approx 200 meters / 626 ft from the jungle below.
Since the 3rd century BC Sigiriya served as a monastery. In the second half of the 5th century, King Kasyapa decided to construct a royal residence here. How they hauled the supplies (and the king) up there beats me. After the King’s death, Sigiriya again became a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century when the rock was then abandoned. Fast forward to present day and it is the country’s number one tourist destination. There is so much to see here: gardens, ruins, the “mirror wall”, the huge stone lion entrance, cave paintings, etc.
