George Mendonsa, identified as the sailor in the famous Times Square photo dubbed “The Kiss,” has died at age 95. The photo, first published in Life magazine, was taken on August 14, 1945, shortly after news of Japan’s surrender in World War II spread through New York’s streets. Mendosa said he was at a matinee when a crowd began pound on the theater doors, shouting, “The war is over!” He left the show to find thousands of revelers in the streets celebrating. The woman in the picture, a dental assistant named Greta Friedman, died in 2016. The photo has sparked countless homages as well as admonitions from those who say it represents an unwanted sexual advance.
