I’ve always enjoyed the processes, stories and innovations that designers discover in the course of doing a collection for the @woolmark #WoolmarkPrize
at this year’s final there was a real emphasis on pushing wool as a material that can be performance driven (lots of water repellant finishes and bonding) but also on how to represent its endurance qualities with upcycled knits as seen in @cmmn_swdn
Other highlights included @colovos ‘s wool denim workwear pieces (winning them the Womenswear award), @iamchen ‘s exuberant fully fashioned knits, @nicholas_daley ’s 70s Scottish reggae club attire, @angelchenstudio ‘s interpretation of Qiang tribe costume and @danielwfletcher ‘s preserved British craft
But ultimately it was @edwardcrutchley ‘s technique driven dialogue between fabrics from around the world featuring everything from Breton lace to Indonesian batik (burnt out with a wool eating protein) that impressed the jury as he took home both the Menswear and Innovation Prize
Another politically charged message perhaps - that inter-cultural connections are so very vital in our globalised world ? ?????
