Question : can I teach an AI to do what I do ?
These images of Sara Grace Wallerstedt / @walldamort in Haute Couture, were made by feeding all my photographs from the session into an AI built by the brilliant digital artist #MarioKlingemann (@quasimondo) in 2017. They marked the beginning of a SHOWstudio AI project, in which we will explore the next frontier, asking whether AI has the ability to match human creativity. This far, advances in Artificial Intelligence are achieved by feeding an AI with huge amounts of data so it can predict the outcome of a new decision based on the probability of what had occured before. Very simply put, the AI generation of 'new imagery' is based on learnt probability in the production of predicted pixels. 'If I have a red pixel, what is the chance that the next pixel will be the same colour?’ Although highly interesting, this bears no resemblance to real creativity and is arguably almost it’s opposite. It takes none of the original reasons to actual want to create an image; the desire, the love , the fear, the anger, the actual need to create. So can we challenge this?
The SHOWstudio project will evolve in stages, dependant on the results of research and interviews we undertake, therefore I encourage you to email ai@showstudio.com with your suggestions and ideas- these will become part of the content of the project and inform the it's outcome.
