Six years after we started recording Colors here we are on the red carpet at the grammy awards with most of the recording team from the album who had just won the best engineering grammy on sunday (missing greg and serban who went skiing). It would be an understatement to say these folks worked extremely hard and long trying to get the sound of this record right, a maddening and elusive process. we took some of the bench mark classics and the newest of the new as a guide and experimented to find the right balance between traditional and modern, rough and polished, analog and digital. Most of what you hear on the album is played live by human hands and recorded in the tradional multitracking style. but we wanted it to be as immediate and modern as the digital in the box sounds you hear in most modern music. to make the differing approaches fit together was a real trick and took a lot of time and patience. months and years of misteps, failures, deadends, working all night and grinding until the very last minute. thank you all for hanging in there and indulging this experiment. this is the unsung shit, the real backbreaking nitty gritty that makes these albums possible and I know how much further everybody pushed on this one. thanks to greg for understanding and helping make this sgt thriller sound amalgamation real. thanks to david and cole for being there almost everyday. darrell for working no days off in paris and elsewhere trying and failing to meet deadline number 20. thanks alex and julian for staying late and letting me explore. and to serban for recalling and remixing, trying to get this weird pop/not pop admixture to hang together and be clear and nasty simulaneouly. and to randy who took over mastering in a tragic moment and gave so many options. cassidy for pitching when we needed back up. and to emily, the first grammy win for a female master engineer in history! you were so generous and listened and understood. these are the real soldiers and the people I spend countless hours with trying to wrangle these songs. couldn't be more proud of everyone and thankful your hard work has been recognized in such a deserving way. ?????????????
