Photo by @ronan_donovan // Land with extreme temperatures, lack of accessible water and little shade led many people to call this place Badlands. It would be a challenging place to make a living off the land, but it's spectacular to visit. This is the largest of Montana's state parks, Makoshika (Ma-ko’-shi-ka). The name is a variant spelling of a Lakota Native American phrase meaning bad land or bad spirits. I took this photo nearly 10 years ago when I was conducting wildlife surveys for the state of Montana.
