‘SURROGATI. Un amore ideale’ ➡️ An article by @alessiaglaviano and #AndreaBocchiola about the exhibition on display at Osservatorio @fondazioneprada - curated by #MelissaHarris - from February 21st to July 22nd. Another community, portrayed this time by @dorfmanelena in ‘Still Lovers’ sees men, and women at times, living with life-size, anatomically realistic, silicone dolls, whom they have elected as life partners. Many people, explains Dorfman, choose silicone partners due to their struggle to form relationships with real, flesh-and-blood women; others, instead, choose surrogates simply to satisfy specific erotic fantasies. The series’ images are the result of a collaboration between the photographer and the subjects of the photos, whom Dorfman asks how they would normally behave or what they would like to do in order to build on such foundation the ‘biography’ of the shot. The artist’s non-judgmental gaze allows the unfolding of a scene from which it emerges how the dolls are the protagonists of the story, just as much as their human counterparts, and how their relationship with the humans is infinitely more complex than one can imagine. Men and women engaged in relationships with adult dolls introduce a new scenario, which a classic psychoanalytic interpretation would attribute to perversion and fetishism. After all, what better way to avoid the risks of a real relationship, including suffering, given that it’s true that when we are about to fall in love we may be ready for much, but we are undoubtedly willing to experience pain, since to love someone one must have accounted for the risk of losing the person, being rejected, become dependent on the other and so on.What better way to bypass the otherness of the Other, his/her radical strangeness, that certain something that makes him/her a stranger even to his/her own self, than to withdraw into a harem of sex dolls? What better way to bypass risks, and perhaps even sexuality itself, which constantly asks us to run our own risks and reinvent ourselves sexually, as well as reclaiming our own sexual identity before the other – the partner – with each and every encounter and intercourse?
