Isolated on a frozen cliff of shelf ice, a loan #polarbear mother and cub on the move in search of food. Sow’s generally have litters of 2-3 cubs, it’s quite likely that this mother here had lost one of her young. Hunting requires long periods of time walking to find prey, especially in the summer. A walking bear expends 13 times more energy when on the move which is why polar bears prefer to “still hunt” - which is to patiently wait for seals near breathing holes or to stalk at a very slow crawl. Having said that, finding these breathing holes is hard and requires a lot of recon, especially in the summer season when the ice is more sparse. photographed for @naturalworldsafaris last year in #svalbard
