Populations of odd invertebrates like the Mediterranean jelly naturally ebb and flow, but scientists are now wondering whether human behaviors like overfishing and pollution could be affecting their numbers. Massive blooms of this species appeared in the Mediterranean area after nutrient runoff from farming and agriculture seeped into the ground and eventually worked its way into the Mar Menor coastal lagoon. While a population explosion may seem like a good thing, it can actually wreak havoc on the environment if populations of natural predators are too low to bring numbers back down to a manageable level. We can all help to maintain the necessary predator-prey balance by ensuring that our trash and recyclables, and our lawn chemicals do not find their way into local waterways.
