This China clam is the rarest of all giant clam species, having a very restricted range and being illegally collected for food and ornamentation on a regular basis as it lives in shallow waters that are easy to navigate. In an effort to save this species, it is bred at Semirara’s breeding center in Philippines, in collaboration with Malaysian authorities, and released in the wild in monitored areas. Dr. Ronnie Estrellada is in charge of this successful conservation breeding and reintroduction program which targets six species of giant clams, all of which are threatened by habitat loss, climate change and illegal collection.
