Photo by @CarltonWard | The Macal River flows through the Maya Mountains in western Belize. I had the opportunity to explore and photograph this area close to the Guatemala border in 2001, shortly before a controversial hydroelectric damn was installed a few miles upstream of San Ignacio. These forested highlands provide habitat for wildlife ranging from tapirs to jaguars and connect to vast protected areas to the east, including Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. The Macal joins with the Mopan at San Ignacio to form the Belize River, which enters the Caribbean Sea near Belize City. The combined watershed serves half of the population of Belize.
