TOM SANDBERG, Things as they are seen. Norwegian artist Tom Sandberg passed away on February 5th five years ago. For more than three decades, he looked at the world through his camera and translated it into black and white and uncountable shades of gray tones in between. In Chapter XI of Anna Karenina, Lev Tolstoj's masterpiece, prince Oblonsky states that "all the variety, charm and beauty of life are made up of light and shadow". A quote that could belong to Sandberg himself. His stubbornness in eluding color was as radical and direct as his choice of avoiding captions. The fact that all his photographs are Untitled corresponds, together with the pureness of black and white, to an invitation to feel rather than to understand.
