‘Burma Love’ is a collaborative project by Yangon-based Italian photographer @chiaraluxardo in which she sets up traditional Myanmar wedding photos for local LGBT couples. ??? In a country where same sex relationships are still illegal, Luxardo’s project manages to touch deep and important themes in a delicate, joyful way. The fact that it manages to merge Western-style photojournalism (for the behind-the-scenes shots) with the traditional Burmese wedding photography aesthetics makes it all the more interesting. ‘I hope that by showing these images more LGBT couples will be encouraged to take their shoot just like any other heteronormative couple, ultimately to normalize their situation and opportunities. I have asked myself if the project itself was not pushing the boundaries too much for the current Myanmar, but so far so good. I started this project in May last year and I took it very slow at the beginning. I spoke to many people and asked for feedback before proceeding and promoting it. At first, I found that some couples were hesitant to be involved, perhaps afraid of what society would say, or perhaps not comfortable doing something that in their eyes was not allowed.
