Spirited is a euphemism for a lot of things, like argumentative or high strung. Sometimes I'm accused of being belligerent about things I believe in. Too passionate or too over the top. I realized that these weren’t always “elegant” or “ladylike” qualities, especially against the proper backdrop of the very proper British boarding school I went to or the Indian social expectations around how "well-mannered" girls should behave. But I loved that I could channel it into debate and drama, and that I started to identify with a deep sense of gender equality very early on. My father, who came from a rather patriarchal lineage of a family business that passed from son to son, never felt like he missed having a son because he had a daughter who knew her mind and wasn’t ever afraid to lead! Over the years I’ve come to appreciate that that “spirit” also gives me courage of conviction and stand fiercely behind values I want to defend. That it can make me a fun dinner guest (well, most of the time!).
