Shasta Smith grew up loving motorcycles, but it was an early 1970s BMW bike bearing the number 5 that would ultimately inspire her to pursue a career in motorcycle restoration.⠀

A decade after catching a glimpse of the BMW at a race in Monterey, Calif., she bought this 1972 Honda CB175 and began to build it out to resemble the vintage gloss-black ride.⠀

"The irony is, at the time, I had a non-motorcycle injury, and my doctor had told me: No riding," said Ms. Smith, 41, an interior architect from Sacramento, Calif. "These were really hard times. I remember thinking, if I can't ride, I'm going to interact with motorcycles in a different way."⠀

Today, she owns a shop that restores vintage bikes, @thevintagemonkey5, which currently has a two-year waitlist.⠀

"Would I be who I am, where I am, doing what I'm doing, if not for this bike?" she said. "No way."⠀
