Yesterday, to honor MLK and his legacy, I spent time with @laylafsaad‘s #MeAndWhiteSupremacyWorkbook. I wanted to honor him by doing work. By unpacking the world from which I (and folks like me) benefit (consciously or unconsciously) and sit with those thoughts. I’ve been trying to spend less time on the internet and more time in the real world. And thinking about how to double down on activism in the present means, for me, sitting with lessons of the past and trying to figure out how to bring them more and more into daily life. What questions do we need to ask ourselves to do that? I needed to sit with them. And then I read my soul sister Glennon’s words, and knew that she’d spoken what I wanted to share. So. For him. For us. For yesterday. For the future. #Repost @glennondoyle: ・・・ Please consider this while we celebrate MLK Jr today: 75 percent of white people did not approve of MLK when he was alive. I think it’s easy for people of privilege to love a dead civil rights activist, because he is no longer a threat to the white supremacy that serves and protects us. If we want to know how we’d have felt about MLK back then, we don’t ask ourselves how we feel about him now. If we want to know if we’d have felt about MLK Jr. back then - we ask ourselves- how do I feel about Colin Kaepernick now? How do I feel about Black Lives Matter? If we want to know how we would have shown up in the last civil rights era- we just ask ourselves how we’re showing up in this civil rights era. Please tag a black activist, artist, or black led business or organization in the comments. Lets spend some time today learning about these people. Let’s spend some money supporting them. Let’s show our gratitude for MLK by showing respect and honor to those who are living out his message today. @laylafsaad @feministpress @rachel.cargle @mspackyetti @amberkgoodwin @taranajaneen @angryblackfemale @feministpress @pastortraci @austinchanning @glowmaven @poorpeoplescampaign // thank you for this image #RARELA /
