Photo by @MichaelGeorge // Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress in Sri Lanka. It is known for the massive lion paws carved into the rock that mark the gateway from halfway up the rock. Visitors can climb to the very top and look back down on the surrounding park (this is the view from the top at sunset, through a January haze). The side of the rock is decorated with colorful frescoes that can be accessed by precarious scaffolding. These were painted when the capital and royal palace sat atop this 660ft high natural feature. After they were abandoned the rock was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. // #srilanka #sigiriya #rockfortress
