One of the most amazing things I did in 2018: being invited into the sacred space in front of a 1,000-year old Buddha at the Sokusein Temple in Kyoto. The monk there sang his prayers while we sat directly in front of the Buddha and his voice was so powerful it shook the statues. I felt his conviction in my bones. During the Meiji period when western culture was insidiously taking over Japan’s traditional culture, the emperor ordered temples to burn the Buddhist effigies. Only a few were hidden away safely, which means that there are very few Buddha that are older than 1,000years. The Buddha here is not only original, he is surrounded by 25 “friends”. One in particular is oddly smiling... it is said that if you pray to this particular one, then you will have good fortune in entertainment and public work. So many actors/singers/artists are patrons here and out front are beautiful works by famous artists like Hiroshi Sugimoto. The temple is so hidden away that even during the Kyoto peak season we were able to be alone. I absolutely recommend this small temple to visit while in Kyoto, it’s a wonderful treasure.
