We are at the precipice of one year into the next. I used to put such weight on these moments but this time around I’ve changed my view a bit. With each new year we have high aspirations and hopes that somehow the one ahead will be magnanimously better than the one behind but the truth is, at least for me, that each year is unique and will hold both sweetness and struggle. I don’t want to turn a blind eye to the struggle that I haven’t yet met by putting all my hopes in my desires for only the sweet. I don’t want to let the turn of a tide define the whole. Instead I will focus on one day, one moment, one step at a time, and be grateful for the sweet times that are gifted as well as for the struggle that will not leave me torn and tattered but rather humbled and strengthened. I will still dream big dreams and nurture the determination and perseverance that grabs hold of them but I will also learn to stop and enjoy the view along the way, and that sometimes the best dreams come packaged differently than the ones the imagination created. There is a time to race and sprint, and a time to slow the stride and rest, and both are good. They say it’s better to see the forest from the trees but I’d like to think it’s valuable to notice the details up close of the leaves, branches, bark and roots as it is to know when to step back and notice the enchantment of the entire woodland before and around you. Perhaps this year is the harmonizing of the two. May it be beautiful, worthwhile, rich, fulfilling, building, rooting and prosperous for the heart, in yes, the struggle and the sweet.
