President Trump has made a surprise trip to #Iraq, marking his first visit to #troops deployed in a #combat zone as Commander in Chief. #Trump had been criticized for not yet doing so since he took office nearly two years ago; former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. In November, Trump said he had been planning to go, but had an “unbelievably busy schedule.” The visit comes at a particularly divisive moment for Trump, who has come under fire for the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the partial shutdown of the federal government over $5 billion for a border wall with Mexico. Trump has been criticized since he announced his plan to withdraw U.S. troops from #Syria and for asserting that the Islamic State has been defeated.
