More than 150 years after it opened, the mine was officially closed on Dec. 21, marking the last of Germany's black coal mines. For most Germans, though, there may be little to mourn about the death of an industry whose heyday is now so distant. “My father said his family used to heat with coal, and I couldn’t even imagine it,” Heitmann told TIME. “For the younger generation, if you don’t come from a coal-mining area, it’s like a different country.” Read more, and see more pictures, on TIME.com.
